Sir David Hancock, WA Past President, d. 5th Sept 2013

Sir David Hancock, Old Whitgiftian (1944-1952) and past President of the Association, died on 5 September at the age of 79.

There will be a celebration of his life and work at Christ’s Chapel, SE21 7AE at 4pm on 24 September followed by a reception at the adjoining Dulwich Picture Gallery

David Hancock left Whitgift with a scholarship to Balliol College, Oxford. He was then a Harkness Fellow in the United States and joined the civil service where he rose to become Permanent Secretary at the Department of Education (1983-89). On leaving the civil service he became a director of Hambros Bank.

He was President of the OWA and took an active part in committee meetings over a number of years. He was also a frequent visitor to Haling Park, particularly for Surrey cricket.
